Portraiture and self-portraiture are artistic genres that run through the history of art: they have served to preserve a presence, extol power, construct identities, commemorate those who are no longer with us, or record the passage of time. From posed easel portraits to abstract portraits, from the mirror to the selfie, styles and tools have changed, but some questions remain: what are we like? Who decides how we are seen? What do we show and what do we leave out of the images that represent us?
In this guided tour and workshop, pupils will explore the collection independently, freely searching for a work that catches their eye; for a portrait that returns their gaze. Building on these choices, we will weave a conversation about identity, the body, the gaze and the different ways in which images both represent and construct us at the same time.
Finally, we will move on to the workshop to experiment with different ways of representing ourselves and others. Moving beyond the search for physical resemblance between a face and its representation, we will explore how posture, gesture, colour, or even what we choose to conceal, allow us to reveal who we are or who we would like to be.
Aimed at: Upper and lower primary school, secondary school, sixth form, vocational training and university.
