This masterpiece of Spanish-language fantasy literature is coming to the Can Prunera Reading Club. According to the master Borges, it is a perfect novel – without exaggeration – in terms of its form, content and language. The Argentine writer even wrote the foreword to Casares’s work, such was his love and devotion to the book. Casares takes us to an island with a mysterious building. The year is 1924. A diary written by a fugitive, withdrawn into himself, who falls in love with an impassive woman will serve as the link and central thread of a plot where philosophy, unreality and the constant interplay of mirrors—between what we see and what we believe we see—come together to put the reader to the test.
Every sentence carries a subtext. Every carefully chosen word reveals a hidden world. Nothing is what it seems. Everything appears to be what it is.
