The second edition of the Can Prunera Reading Club, for those who appreciate books as works of art: with time, curiosity and conversation. Each session involves a thoughtful, shared reading, an open dialogue and a space for thinking together. You don’t need to be an expert; you just need a desire to read and listen. Sessions take place once a month.
“Agua y Jabón”
by Marta D. Riezu
Conducted by Teresa Mayol.
Cecil Beaton was asked: What is elegance? And he replied: water and soap. Which is the same as saying: elegance is simplicity, utility, the everyday beauty. Involuntary elegance is associated with the generous gesture, with discreet joy, with the person who gives.
The book is divided into three parts: Temperaments, Objects and Places. Riezu builds a personal canon not as a refuge against vulgarity, but against its substitute. The world of this book is fragmentary, slow, simple. The author recommends opening it to any page and enjoying a moment of literary company, reflecting, looking out of the window, going for a walk. That would be perfect.
Agua y Jabón is about a love for public libraries, cheap humour, maps, the unbeatable charm of birds, old bakeries, trains, Bruno Munari, Wagner’s Venice, eating fruit straight from the tree, nuts, cheese, wool, gardens…
Disordered intuition, old and new loyalties, fleeting friendships and eternal loves. Riezu is silence, admiration, patience and a fondness for the most immediate reality.
