Susan Robinson: painting, poetry and joy

Last Saturday the 9th, Can Prunera was bejeweled with the verses of Susan Robinson. Her poetic intensity, simplicity and expansive creative soul captivated a devoted audience who learnt a valuable lesson: it is never too late to create beauty. Susan has been living in Deià since 1960, when at just 20 years old, she found her place in the world. Like Robert Graves, she saw in that small village a gateway to the creative silence. On an island, there is always the possibility of taking refuge, of hiding, of making oneself small in order to magnify the spirit and build what one has come in life to do. Deià channeled Susan’s lyricism, which took the form of verse and colour to paint her pictures and fill her days with grace. Poetry and painting, united and intertwined forever.

With the uninhibited confidence that comes from self-assurance, Susan recited several poems aloud for the delight and enjoyment of those present. She chose sensual, erotic, joyful and melancholic poems that transported us to that incandescent atmosphere, now almost extinct, of an ethereal Deià, removed from the problems of a changing universe. Susan’s smile and gratitude at the presence of friends, family and strangers was priceless. Susan’s poetic style has echoes of Emily Dickinson; with that solitary candor of souls who seek something beyond the obvious. Only beauty remains.

With this presentation, we are launching a new format of cultural events at Can Prunera that combine literature and painting. Morning Poetry where verses are recited in the Sculpture Garden, accompanied by a fine Mallorcan wine and an aperitif.
