Back Home
Now living in Sóller and closely involved in the town’s cultural life, Ramón Farrán has chosen Can Prunera to present this new work as he approaches an extraordinary milestone: eighty years in music.
Recorded almost entirely in Sóller and the surrounding area, Back Home grows out of his close relationship with Mallorca’s landscape and cultural heritage. The project brings together musicians from a variety of backgrounds, both from the wider Mediterranean region and the local music scene, combining popular music, jazz, electronic music and contemporary classical music. Through a wide range of instruments and voices in Mallorcan Catalan, Spanish, English and German, Farrán explores the meeting points between different musical traditions and languages, creating a work that engages with the island’s cultural memory from a contemporary perspective.
The compositions to be presented at Can Prunera pay tribute to the Mallorcan poet Miquel Costa i Llobera. Lo pi de Mallorca revisits the celebrated verses of Lo pi de Formentor (The Pine of Formentor) and, through them, invites us to discover a play of references between the poet, the enduring pine tree and the island of Mallorca. Written in 1875, Costa i Llobera’s poem marked its 150th anniversary in 2025, a milestone to which Farrán’s musical work is closely connected. “In this new musical composition, I identify the pine tree with the poet and Formentor with Mallorca; Lo pi de Mallorca represents the essence of Mallorca,” Farrán explains. Meanwhile, Poesia, Poesia extends this tribute, celebrating Costa i Llobera’s poetic work as a whole.
Both singles feature vocals by Natalia Farrán and Lorenzo Santamaría, alongside the contribution of British musician and producer Andy Lewis and singer Waltraud Mucher, who performs the choral part in Poesia, Poesia. The presentation will offer an opportunity to discover, through the artists themselves, the creative process and the musical and literary influences that have shaped Back Home.
The artists

Ramón Farrán is a composer, musician and producer whose career spans much of the history of jazz and contemporary popular music in Spain. He began playing drums at the age of eight in his father’s orchestra in Barcelona and, since then, his career has been closely connected to some of the most significant transformations in the Spanish music industry. He took part in the early broadcasts of Spanish Television (TVE), contributed to the development of jazz in the country, and was a pioneer in introducing new technologies into recording studios, from multitrack mixing consoles to the first synthesisers. He also composed an entirely computer-generated soundtrack for an audiovisual work presented for the inauguration of Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofía. Founder of the Spanish National Jazz Orchestra (ONJAZZ), he continues to explore new musical languages and sound formats. With Back Home, this innovative spirit meets a renewed engagement with Mallorca’s landscape, poetry and cultural roots.
