Calligraphy and Modernism Workshop

Modernism was an international artistic renewal movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries that aimed to create a new form of art. This movement was present in all artistic fields and, consequently, also in the graphic arts, where it influenced the creation and design of new styles of typefaces. The posters, albums, and books that appeared during this period sought to emulate the beauty of nature’s sinuous lines, applying them to the practical needs of everyday life.

Objetives

The workshop aims to introduce students to this type of Modernist calligraphy. Over the course of several sessions, participants will work with various alphabets in this historical style, using metal nibs, inks, and colors on different types of paper. The basic objectives of the workshop are:

– To contextualize the Modernist movement by focusing on its artisanal, artistic, and calligraphic aspects.
– To learn the basic principles of calligraphy and some of its tools.
– To practice calligraphy based on an understanding of a historical script.
– To practice letterforms and develop a fluid, measured rhythm.
– To develop a calligraphy project based on the knowledge acquired.
