Ibrahima Balde was born in Guinea, but was forced to leave his home to go and find his little brother. The story begins like this: ‘I’m in Europe, but I didn’t want to come to Europ’. Balde did not leave home to pursue a dream. He left it to find the person he loved most. The raw emotions and feelings we encounter in the book will transport us to a reality that is by no means unique to these two brothers. The harshness of this odyssey across borders, deserts and oceans will remain in our hearts forever. The narrator’s perspective is innocent, hard-hit, highly poetic in its execution and unique in its approach.
Hermanito is living literature thanks to its purely human experiences. The fruitful collaboration between Balde and Amets—a bertsolari and a master storyteller—makes this encounter a way of life. Life and words, eternal friendships and unbreakable bonds.
